Description
Baobab oil has become one of our favorite oils for skin health. It is excellent for skin barrier repair while having a low chance of allergic reaction. The mild aroma and rich feel on skin make it supremely comforting.
Baobab trees are iconic parts of the Southern African landscape and also grow in Madagascar and parts of Australia. They can live to thousands of years old and are known as the "Tree of Life" for the habitat, fruit, and medicinal uses they offer. The trees can reach 100 feet tall and have extraordinarily thick trunks. The root systems improve soil moisture and chemistry.
Baobab fruits are usually wild harvested by communities (especially women) and are generally collected when the ripe fruit has fallen from the tree. The fruit is a rich source of Vitamin C and is eaten as food, and the inedible seed is pressed for oil.
Baobab oil is rich in antioxidants and Vitamins like D, E, and K. (Msalilwa et al., 2020; Ofori & Addo, 2023).
The fatty acid profile can vary significantly by the oil's origin, and South African oil happens to have one of the most beneficial ratios of fatty acids. We generally look for oils with somewhat low levels of Oleic fatty acid since high levels can disrupt the skin barrier long term. South African Baobab oil has just about 25% Oleic fatty acid and around 35% Linoleic fatty acid combined with around 28% Palmitic fatty acid. (source)
Linoleic and Palmitic fatty acids help this oil rejuvenate a healthy balance of fatty acids in skin, and give it the oil a rich and protective feel.
